How to Find Us - IRC
Using Java Chat
CHAT WITH US NOW from the DALNet
home page - it's fast & easy! Just follow these simple steps:
- Click on the link below, enter a
nickname in the Chat now! box, and click Go. You may have to
grant privileges to use this applet for the first time.
- A small chat window will open and
connect you to a DALNet chat server. If you can't seem to
connect at first, just try again.
- Once you are connected you will be in
the default chat room - kind of like a lobby. Type: /join
#bbw-texas
- That's it! You are now chatting
in our channel. :) Our channel is fairly new, but you can
usually find people there in the evenings. The commands listed
in the section below can also be used with this java chat. Good
luck - and email us if you
need assistance!

Using a Chat Client
IRC (Internet Relay Chat) is a series of
networks, each with its own set of servers. DALNet is one of those
networks. There are many more options and features available when
using an IRC chat client to chat rather than the above java chat. In order to connect to
DALNet using a chat client, you need to download one of
the free IRC chat clients that are available. We recommend that if
you are running Windows, download mIRC
here. If you are running a Mac, download IRCle
here. Both of those download sites also have excellent
instructions for setting up the program - it's easy to do and only takes a
few minutes.
Once you have the program all set up,
connect to one of the DALNet servers. If you have problems finding a
server, a current list of servers can be found on the DALNet
home page. After connecting to a server, type:
/join #bbw-texas
You may be messaged by NickServ to change your nickname if it
belongs to a registered user. To change your nickname after you are
connected, type:
/nick newnickname
A Few Basics
Use the /ignore command to block rude/unwanted messages in private chat or for those
annoying you in open chat. To use this command, type:
/ignore nickname
To send a private
message in its own window to another user, double-click on the nickname
in the name list and type in the window that opens. To send a private message without
opening a window, type:
/notice nickname
<enter the message here>
To leave the chat room, type:
/part
To quit IRC, type:
/quit
- Other Common Commands:
-
- /whois nickname
- This will show you some limited information about the nickname.
- /away reason you are away
- This will set an away message that
will be shown to anyone who does a /whois on you or tries to message
you. You can type an entire sentence if you'd like. Some common uses of the
command are:
-
- AFK - Away from keyboard
- BRB - Be Right Back
- BBL - Be Back Later
- BBIAB - Be Back in a Bit
-
- /me action
- This sends a chat message to the room
about the action you made. For example, if you type /me
laughs and your handle is John then the message
* John laughs
will be sent to the chat room.
We hope you'll join us
